Snainton Village Hall

A good gathering of members and guests at what will be our new club venue for demonstrations after Christmas.

As with last year, there were three categories of competition, beginners, intermediate and expert. These attracted an impressive 48 entries. The usual variety of styles, subjects and wood, and all were to high standard.

The winners were: beginners – Louise Akers, Intermediate - George Nutt, and Expert - John Whiteley. There were second and third awards in each category, but apologies as I did not note who they were. Do let me know anyone who can.

Other competitions were the "familiar faces2 provided by Terry, the chisel handles wood identification and wood blanks identification, provided by John Whiteley.

In giving the answers, John related a story attached to the New Zealand bog cowrie blank – which he had picked up on his recent travels down under. It came from a massive tree 40 foot in diameter at its base, which had been submerged in a bog and dug out by a remarkable boat builder and wood craftsman who John had the privilege of meeting.
