A collection of woodturning videos made by members or demonstrators. The club has many more on DVD, but will not be sharing them without permission from the demonstrators involved. They are available to loan - have a look at the DVD library index.

4 August 2022 Lowestoft based Darren Breeze visited us as part his mini Yorkshire tour, calling at Jorvik and Thirsk clubs after us. He demonstrated turning a 12 inch bowl from sycamore, carefully shaping it and then texturing with an Arbortech and colouring with Chestnut Rainbow waxes. Lots of good hints and tips, with something there for every level of turner.
2 June 2022 Club member Peter Howells demonstrated how to make a thin walled pierced vase.
3 March 2022 Tom Manney came to one of our hands-on events, and took up John Whiteley's offer of a day with him at his workshop in Whitby. Tom is, amongst other things, a film-maker, so he has posted video of the day on You Tube. The woodturning bit comes after a 30-second montage introduction.
3 March 2022 Dennis Wake from Hartlepool visited and demonstrated turning a pedestal bowl. Sound quality is a bit hollow, but it is there.
6 January 2022 With the planned meeting in Snainton Village Hall being cancelled due to the escalating Covid crisis, Steve Fearnley put together some video footage of projects undertaken over the past couple of weeks: Turning eggs in different timbers; a look at a new Razertip pyrography machine, and mixing a paste-consistency polish from Beeswax and liquid paraffin.
4 November 2021 John Whiteley did a demonstration using an eccentric chuck, stepping in at relatively short notice. We didn't have our video equipment available, so this was taken using an iphone, hence the relatively poor sound and video quality.
October 2021 Steve Fearnley stepped in at short notice when Sue Harker was unable to do her demonstration. Having moved away from making large summerhouse finials, he was now looking at using up offcuts, and demonstrated how he made "pinch pots" for salt and pepper, plus a salt spoon. This involved multi axis turning and different methods of holding. It also ended up as a demonstration of the correct grain orientation and wrong grain orientation. Broadcast on Zoom on the evening, and recorded at the same time. Still getting there with this - some close ups in the demonstration should have been directed more towards the cameras, and the microphone picked up a little heavy breathing at times - too close. I think we are getting better.
September 2021 Philip Greenwood demonstrated making an apple and a clock, showing a couple of useful home-made jigs for holding the apple and for drilling holes. Lots of tips along the way as well. This was broadcast on Zoom on the evening, and recorded at the same time, but we are still low on our learning curve for all this technology, so unfortunately the sound disappears around 30 minutes for about 10 minutes. Otherwise it doesn't seem too bad. We hope to get a better zoom in on detail in upcoming demonstrations.
July 2021 John Whiteley demonstrated making a nine centred bowl with 8 lobes, using a doughnut chuck. Shaing the outside using microplanes and abrasives was also covered. John finished with a brief tour of his workshop, looking at some tools and some methods he uses for storing them, in a relatively small space.
July 2021 Robert Thompson's "Mouseman" workshops in Kilburn have been a firm favourite of mine over many years. A customer recently sent a link to a 1948 home movie made by a couple from Leeds, showing some of the pieces being made. It is in the Yorkshire Film Archive, and is about 20 minutes long. If you have ever seen one of the Robert Thompson bowls with a mouse on the outside, and wonder how they do it, then there is a couple of minutes of woodturning in the film, starting after 16 min 40 secs.
June 2021 The online club demonstration by Steve Fearnley, covering a range of keyring and key fob designs, and various techniques involved in making them. Not the best of sound quality - sorry. Not sure it is worth re-recording the sound to improve things. Maybe one day.
February 2021 Steve Fearnley demonstrated the design, woodturning, pyrography and finishing involved in a project to make a 12 inch rippled sycamore commemorative platter. A look at using a computer for lettering and design is included, as well as some details on the Peter Child pyrography machine used.
January 2021 John Boyne Aitken gave us an online demonstration for our January 2021 meeting. He posted a video online of him making a darning mushroom shortly afterwards.
August 2020 AWGB did a number of workshop tours by members early on in the lockdown. Screen quality varies from 1st class video equipment to shaky, blurred hand held iPhone pics. I contributed with a mix of screen quality, on an iphone.
November 2020 Lance has posted a beautifully simple 4 minute video on You Tube, showing how he and his son made a resin river table. Well worth a watch.
November 2020 Lance and John combined to video a demonstration by John of adding spiral decoration to hollow forms, one of John's obsessions during lockdown. As is often the case, John's willingness to experiment and make mistakes produces an interesting finale.
