16 December 2016 Some brief notes reporting on the Christmas party, and a gallery of pictures recording the excellent showing of woodturning on the night are now on the site.

15 November 2016 A write up of this month's demonstration by Randal Marr is now available. The last club demo at Snainton Woodworking Supplies. A sad day - I have enjoyed many excellent evenings here. Next month's party is at Snainton Village Hall, and so are all future demonstration nights. Hopefully we will be able to retain the quality, if not the workshop atmosphere.

13 October 2016 A write-up of Paul Jones' visit, demonstrating skew chisel techniques, is now on the site.

20 September 2016 A few photos from the exhibition at the weekend. As with last year, there was some superb work, and a great variety of items. £877 was collected from sales, with £175 going to club funds from the 20% levy.

DON'T FORGET The 2nd Club Exhibition and Sale is on Saturday and Sunday 17 - 18 September, at the Hill Institute in Thornton le Dale. 10 am - 4 pm. Some photos of last December's exhibition are on the site.

31 August 2016 A report on the AGM and subsequent Show and Tell session is now on the website. Also the calendar of events for the coming year has been updated, along with a few details about demonstrators.

30 August 2016. Tony Taylor from Herts and Beds Woodturners sent me an article on making a vacuum chuck based on a vacuum cleaner rather than a compressor. He said I was welcome to share it with club members, so it is available on the site.

13 July 2016 A write up and photos of the demonstration by Joey Richardson is now available.

19 June 2016 Apologies for an even longer delay, but the report on another really good demonstration by Simon Hope on threadchasing is now on the website.

14 May 2016 Apologies for the slight delay, but the report on Richard Findley's excellent demonstration of turning a table lamp is now on the site.

24 April 2016 Following the successful club exhibition and sale last November, a date for a repeat performance has been set. John Whiteley has booked the Thornton Dale Hall for the weekend of 18-19 September. If anyone is prepared to help, and/or would like to submit items for display or sale, please let Gordon know.

10 April 2016 A write up of Thursday's demonstration by Steve Fearnley is now available. Steve made a small trophy, and described how he adds inscriptions using pyrography, and how he uses a computer to generate these. Also a brief mention of how he photographs his work.
Also a few notes on our chairman, Gordon Malan, have been added to the Profiles section. If any other members would like to describe themselves and their woodturning interests, please email Steve Fearnley who will happily put this on the site.

4 March 2016 A write-up of last night's demonstration by Margaret Garrard is now available on the site. Margaret turned a small hollow form, and a sphere with holding block. An enjoyable evening watching a careful and precise craftswoman at work. Lots of spin-off ideas and tips.

28 February 2016 I have added details of the final demonstrator to visit us in July this year. It will be Joey Richardson, who creates highly distinctive floral designs using carving, piercing, colouring, and more recently mixed media, adding cast glass, metal and photographs to her creations. She has visited us before, and there is a report of her May 2010 visit in the news archive.

27 February 2016 We received some information about the Turners’ Company 2016 Competitions, which will take place in October and be held in conjunction with this year’s Wizardry in Wood exhibition. There are four Open Competitions and also competitions organised with the AWGB, Society of Ornamental Turners, Association of Polelathe Turners & Greenwood Workers and for members of the Turners’ Company. 4 February 2016 An enjoyable and successful Hands On night was the order of the evening for this month's club night. Nine very different aspects of working in wood were presented by club members - really showing the wealth of talent present in our little club. Some photos and brief notes are available.

4 February 2016 The missing calendar date for a demonstrator in April has been filled by Steve Fearnley, who will demonstrate and talk about trophy making, including how he pyrographs inscriptions and logos on the trophies.

1 February 2016 More details on the forthcoming Hands on night, from Malcolm Dayson. Seven demonstrators: John Whiteley (hollowing), Dave Lowe (pyrography, colouring), Gordon Malan (chip carving), Albert Kitching (thread chasing, Sue Harker (basic coves & beads), Philip Greenwood (skew chisel), Peter Emmerson (flowers), John Nesom (Treadle powered table saw!!)

8 January 2016 The latest demonstration was a little out of the ordinary, with Jim Wood showing how to build and use a pole lathe. Interesting for being different, but for the 7 new guests that came on the night, please don't think this is what all demonstrations are like - we usually look at more modern day techniques! Having said that, the next oe is different as well, being a Hands On Night, where you can either watch or have a go at a variety of tunring techniques on Snainton's lathes. Come suitably dressed if you intend to try something out.

3 January 2016 With the Christmas break nearly over, I have finally found a little time to update the website with a report and some photographs from the club Christmas party and competition. With thanks to Gordon Malan for the material.

Club move to Snainton Village Hall

The first gathering at our new venue - Snainton Village Hall - in January 2017. The audience was watching club professional Dave Lowe demonstrate different finishing products.

Our club secretary Malcolm emailed a couple of photos of a shrub he spotted on his travels. These are banksia nuts growing in their native environment.

Notice of this year's Wizardry in Wood exhibition

The Worshipful Company of Turners of London will be holding their Wizardry in Wood exhibition in October. There are open competitions to go with the exhibition - more details are available on a pdf document.

George Lailey's lathe in The Museum of English Rural Life

This is the pole lathe that George Lailey (1869-1958) used until his death in 1958. He is said to be the last professional bowl turner to use a pole lathe for his work. Mentioned by Jim Wood in his demonstration in January. The museum is run by The University of Reading.
