• 12 December 2020 Ian has booked John Boyne-Aitken , The Bowler-Hatted woodturner, for an online demonstration on Thursday 7 January 2021, 7.30 pm. John has been chairman of the Register of Professional Woodturners since 2016. One of the few bonuses of the Covid crisis is that we get an opportunity to watch a woodturner from down south who would not normally visit us up here in the north. Hopefully the demonstration will be well supported and we can cover costs - there will be a £5 charge for watching on the night.
• 3 December 2020 We held our Christmas party online this year, thanks to Derek Puplett at AWGB for hosting it for us. A simple affair with a dozen participants, consisting of a crossword prepared by Lance, a quiz by Steve Fearnley, and a handful of turned pieces shared by members. I have put the quiz and crossword on the website, together with the answers, should anyone wish to have a go.
• 17 November 2020 Lance has posted a beautifully simple 4 minute video on You Tube, showing how he and his son made a resin river table. Well worth a watch.
• 5 November 2020 John Whiteley and Lance Garrard conspired to create a demonstration video on twists and spirals, and shared this with us over Zoom for our November demonstration.

• 5 October 2020 I was very sad to read in the AWGB bulletin that Mark Baker had passed away. He had made it public in the Woodturning magazine that he had terminal cancer, when he stepped back as editor earlier this year.
  I always enjoyed Mark's demonstrations, having watched him at Snainton in 2014, Earswick 2018 and Harrogate Woodworking Show numerous times. If ever I sent a message to the Woodturning magazine, he always replied, often picking up the phone to reply in person.
  I have one of Mark's bowls, which I won in a raffle at Snainton. Turned thin, with a small foot, he donated it for charity at his Snainton woodturning demonstration in 2014.
  It demonstrates his interest in form and balance, two of his recurring themes. I will remember Mark each time I pick some fruit from that bowl.
• 1 October 2020 The recent rise in Covid 19 cases meant that we remained unable to meet for our October demonstration. However, Sue Harker provided us with an entertaining demo online using Zoom, and produced a sunflower tea-light and novelty iPhone holder. Some photos may appear on the site when time permits
• 3 September 2020 Still no meetings in person. Steve Fearnley put together a demonstration which was shared online via Zoom, looking at some of the techniques involved in making Harry Potter style wands. The video may appear on the website if time permits.
• 14 August 2020 The 3 September 2020 demo will be online via Zoom. Joining details will come from Lance nearer the date. Subject matter detailed below.
• 21 July 2020 7.30 pm Steve Fearnley is doing a Talking Turning and workshop tour for AWGB - a little more structured than the first experiment he did back in May. You don't have to be an AWGB member to view. The link is on the AWGB website.
• 8 July 2020 We are considering re-starting club nights on 3 September, subject to regulations in place at that time. Steve Fearnley will do a demo, which he will convert to an online demo if restrictions still prevent us meeting. Probably looking at Harry Potter style wands, involving the techniques of pyrography, barley twist shaping, carving (with a Proxxon), ebonising, oh and turning. Bring your own flask and biscuits, or beer and crisps, to get around the difficutlies of hygienic catering. Remember club membership has been extended until at least March 2021, with no enrolment fees required until that date.
• 8 July 2020 A schedule of demonstration for 2020 - 2021 is available on the Calendar page, obviously subject to resrictions.
• 8 July 2020 The AGM this year will be conducted as far as possible virtually, with reports being posted to all member before the August meeting.
• 4 June 2020 The AWGB have a number of workshop tours and chats coming up on Zoom.

• 30 May 2020 Bob Edwards alerts us to a timber gold mine: "I drove over yesterday, I filled my boot with sycamore, holly and apple. Charged me £20. The guy I saw was happy to chainsaw to order. Water content varied from 8% to 20%. Need to seal the end-grain and store to dry out further. Members with lathes that can accommodate larger pieces would have a field day. • 27 May 2020 If you are looking for more virtual demonstrations, Emma Cook, the "Tiny Turner", has put a few on YouTube now. The last was streamed live on Saturday 23 May. They are all still available, all free, and all entertaining and informative.

• 22 May 2020 Another virtual demonstration is being organised for Thursday 4 June 2020 at 7.30 pm. Phil Greenwood again, on You Tube. Expressions of interest to Lance, who will send out log on details nearer the time.
• 21 May 2020 A dozen people Zoomed in to Lance's workshop tour last night. A fascinating look at a well equipped spacious workshop, with much of the fittings and machinery made by Lance. Very different to my own small dusty workshop that we toured last week. Hopeflly someone else will now step up for another tour - please make an offer.

• 8 May 2020 Some notes and photos from Philip Greenwood's online demonstration last night are now on the site. A first for him and for us.
• 4 May 2020 The Corona Gallery was getting a little large, so has now been split into months March, April and May. Keep the photos coming.
• 1 May 2020 The committee has decided that next year's membership fee will be reduced by how ever many months we lose this year as a result of the lockdown.
• 6 April 2020 The corona gallery of turning by members during the crisis has new additions almost every day. Keep them coming everyone. Thanks to Lance for coordinating and distibuting them.
• 27 March 2020. We have just heard that the Thornton le Dale show in August has been cancelled for this year.
  Lance has been receiving pictures of members' turning. I have put them on a Corona Gallery page.
• 20 March 2020 Regretfully due to coronavirus we are cancelling all events until further notice. This includes demonstration evenings, the Thornton Dale sale at the end of April, and probably more. This website will try and keep up with developments.
  In the meantime, if anyone has any pictures of their woodturning they would like to share to try and keep things going, please email them to me or to Lance, possibly with a little commentary. I will put them on the website on a Corona gallery page. I have started things off with three items made this week.
• 12 March 2020 A write-up of John Whiteley's demonstration last Thursday is now on the website.
• 26 February 2020 With apologies for the delay, a brief report on the Hands On Night earlier this month is now available.
  As Keith recovers, he hopes to continue at the club, but step back from some of the things he has so kindly done for us over the years. One such task is setting up the video systems for demonstrations. If anyone could assist with this we would be very grateful for volunteers.
• 26 January 2020 Our next training day is Monday the 17th February 10-3pm. John Lund will be hosting the event at Manor Farm, Broughton, Malton, YO17 6QJ. Contact Lance if you are interested.
• 26 January 2020 For February "Hands On" night, there will be 3 lathes in operation with activities on hollowing, bowl turning and spindle work- possibly pens. There will also be a CBN sharpening system set up (ceramic grindstone, cubic boron nitride) and a Sorby Pro-Edge belt sharpening system, so feel free to bring along your tools to sharpen. There will be a buffing system (Beall 3-mops) available to have a go on, and finally chance to look at and use a Peter Child pyrography kit and Proxxon carving tools for lettering.
  A reminder that any prospective new members will be welcome, and membership fees for the remainder of the year are reduced pro-rata: just £21 at the next meeting
• At next months' demonstration on Thursday 5 March, John Whiteley will be turning a flower, turning people, and turning a "hollow doughnut".
• 26 January 2020 Following a committee meeting last week, we can announce club sale dates for this year as: Saturday and Sunday, 25-6 April, at Thornton le Dale Hill Institute; Wednesday 5 August at Thornton le Dale Show; Saturday and Sunday 12 -13 December 2020, at Thornton le Dale Hill Institute.
  We also decided to make the August meeting a much briefer AGM, and then devote most of the evening to Hands On / mini demos / displays of work.
• 19 January 2020 Steve Matthews of the Cheshire Guild of Woodturners sent us an invitation to a full-day event:
  We are holding an all day demonstration on Saturday 18th April with Gary Lowe , the Tartan Turner, demonstrating. We would like to invite you and your members to the event. Tickets are £12.50 in advance which includes refreshments during the day and a light lunch.
  It will commence at 10.00am and run till around 4.00pm. It will be held at the Village Hall Plumley WA16 0TR.

• 14 January 2020 Following on from Keith's health issues over Christmas, he will not be doing the demonstration in April. In his place we have booked John Oldham from Teeside Woodturners, who last demonstrated Harry Potter light-up wands back in October 2017. I believe will be doing a desk/table lamp with LED lighting. So the programme now is March - John Whiteley, April - John Oldham.
