At the club Open Evening on Thursday 4 January 2024, we welcomed over 50 people, many of who enrolled as club members for the year. (We are already up to 57 members for 2024.) The evening was a great success, with enthusiastic purchases from the club shop of turning blanks, second hand tools, finishing products and abrasives; half a dozen lathes were in operation with demonstrations and opportunity to "have a go", as well as sharpening equipment and pyrography advice and practice. I am very saddened to report that Brian Wrigglesworth has passed away this week after a short illness. Brian had been a club member for many years - probably over 20 years - stretching back to the club's early days. He regularly won club competitions with his finely crafted turning of advanced and challenging pieces. - the last occasion being the club competition in December 2023. We made Brian a life member in 2021, in recognition of his long-standing membership, and service to the club through his video work and DVD production, as well as often being the first to arrive and help out out with the chairs! A fine woodturner, and a fine man.

Sue Harker IRD

An enjoyable evening watching Sue Harker via internet link, working in her own workshop in Bridlington. This turned out to be Sue's last demonstration before she retires. She made a pedestal bowl for holding earrings and other jewellery, and finished with a quick demonstration of turning an earring from resin. We wish her well in her retirement - Sue and Graham have given much to Ryedale Woodturners, and formerly Snainton Woodturning Club, over many years.

Hands on night - beginners' tuition. 29 people turned up either as tutors, learners, helpers or observers. 12 of these had a couple of hours of hands-on tuition from some of our more experienced members, and a good evening seemed to be enjoyed by all. Our next training event is in Broughton, on Monday 17 June, 10 am - 4pm (members only).

Posted 28 May 2024. First sale of the year. We had a stall in the Milton Rooms at Malton for the three-day Food Lovers' festival. Lots of interest in our turning, and £1000 worth of items sold. Our next sale is at Filey Craft Fair on the weekend of 13-14 July.

Pyrography Demonstration

Spinning wheels and bobbins

Open evening

Posted 19 July 2024. Updated 4 August 2024 We held the second of our 2024 Open Evenings, a very successful evening with lots of activity, conversation, demonstrations and shared experience. There were eight lathes in operation altogether, all manned by experienced turners who shared their skills and knowledge with guests and members throughout the evening. There were also demonstrations of pyrography, polishing (with buffing wheels) and how to set up segmented work. All accompanied with tea, coffee and biscuits, and a shop selling finishing products, wood blanks and second hand tools. And all of this for free!

Exhibition, sale and demonstration

Thornton le Dale Show 7 August 2024

Posted 4 August 2024. Updated 14 September We had a large marquee at the annual Thornton le Dale Show, with items for sale and turning demonstrations throughout the day. We had over a 1000 people come through the tent, with lots of interesting conversations about wood and woodturning.

In the woodturning competition classes in the crafts tent, the club had a clean sweep in winning positions. Class 60: turned bowl. 1st Barry Toes, 2nd Geoff Walker, 3rd Barry Toes Class 61: spindle turning. 1st Steve Fearnley (pair of candlesticks), 2nd Geoff Walker (tall goblet), 3rd Barry Toes (tall T-light holder). Class 62: any item in wood. 1st Steve Fearnley (60 timbers egg rack), 2nd Michael Eyre (truck), 3rd Tom Hall (laminated chopping board). Class 63: a decorated/textured item. 1st Steve Fearnley (pyrographed dog platter), 2nd and 3rd Geoff Walker (textured and coloured bowls)

Keith Gardam

Keith talked about the history of stickmaking, demonstrated how to straighten a shank and tidy up any knots, cut a dowel on the end of a shank, fix a handle to this, and let us in on what judging top quality sticks involves. Sharpening demonstration

Posted 27 October 2024. 25 club members met for an evening looking at sharpening tools, using a Sorby Pro-Edge, a Record whetsone grinder, a Tormek grinder and a CBN wheel. Keith Gardam took us through safety aspects, re-profiling an incorrectly ground bowl gouge (a slow process, but essential for safe use of the tool), carving chisel sharpening and honing, and the same for plane irons. This was the third of our extra Thursday evening meetings this year for members, adding to our training programme and broadening our overall offer.

Richard Findley demonstration

Thursday 7 November 2024, 7.00 - 9.30pm

Posted on 27 October 2024. Updated 8 November 2024 A masterful demonstration, using a small lidded bowl project to explain about tools and techniques for both spindle and faceplate turning. Rchard joined us from his workshop in Leicester via an internet link, with us using the new 8' x 6' projection screen at Snainton Village Hall, together with their new sound system. All worked to excellent effect and delivered a very impressive woodturning demonstration to us, full of explanations and advice on tools and techniques. It left us wanting more - Richard will be back next November at the end of 2025. A video of the demonstration is available on YouTube until the December meeting.

Annual club social and competition

Posted on 22 November 2024. Updated 5 January 2025 Another good turnout, with 37 members and 6 guests – the same total as last year. There were 29 pieces entered in the competitions over the three levels, and 3 entrants in the Chairman’s Challenge – fewer than last year, but of the same high quality and variety. The winner of the Advanced section was Martyn Weller with a segmented vase, pictured here. Full details of the winners, together with some photos, are in the Newsletter of 8 December 2024.
